National-Indigenous-Peoples-Day---Advancing-Reconciliation-Through-Solidarity-and-Justice

On June 21, Canadians celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to recognize and honour the rich histories, cultures, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. It is also an opportunity to reflect on our shared responsibility to advance reconciliation, uphold Indigenous rights, and build a more just and equitable society for all.

For generations, Indigenous communities have faced the harmful impacts of colonization, including the residential school system, the suppression of languages and cultures, and the denial of fundamental rights. The legacy of these injustices continues to affect Indigenous peoples today. Reconciliation requires more than recognition of the past—it requires meaningful action in the present and a commitment to a better future.

The Canadian Union of Skilled Workers – British Columbia (CUSW-BC) believes that the values of fairness, dignity, equality, and respect are essential both in our workplaces and in our communities. These principles align closely with the ongoing efforts of Indigenous peoples and organizations across Canada to achieve justice, self-determination, and true reconciliation.

Like many unions across the labour movement, CUSW-BC recognizes that workers’ rights and Indigenous rights are interconnected. Strong communities are built when all people have access to good jobs, safe working conditions, equal opportunities, and a voice in decisions that affect their lives. Reconciliation means ensuring Indigenous workers and communities have the opportunity to participate fully and equitably in Canada’s economic future while maintaining their cultures, traditions, and rights.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is also a reminder that learning must be ongoing. By listening to Indigenous voices, supporting Indigenous-led initiatives, and educating ourselves about Canada’s history, we can help create a society founded on mutual respect and understanding.

On this National Indigenous Peoples Day, CUSW-BC stands in solidarity with Indigenous peoples across British Columbia and Canada. Together, we can continue the work of reconciliation and help build a future rooted in equality, social justice, and respect for the rights and dignity of all people.
