Labour Day is a profound acknowledgment of the strength, skill, and solidarity of the workers who build and power British Columbia. From the coastal ports and vibrant urban centres to the remote infrastructure projects keeping our northern communities connected, the members of the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers – British Columbia (CUSW-BC) stand at the core of our province’s prosperity.
Today, we honour the legacy of the union movement, a history rooted in the fight for fair wages, safe job sites, reasonable working hours, and human dignity. The protections we often take for granted were not freely given. They were hard-won by workers standing strong, demanding better for themselves, their families, and generations to come.
As CUSW members in BC, we carry that tradition forward into a rapidly changing economic landscape. Our province is undergoing a dynamic transformation. The demand for clean energy, modernized infrastructure, and sustainable technology requires an adaptable, highly trained workforce. Skilled tradespeople are no longer just maintaining the status quo. We are actively building the sustainable future of British Columbia.
Labour Day serves as a critical reminder that economic growth means nothing if it leaves workers behind. True prosperity is measured by the well-being of the people doing the work: their health, their safety, their financial security, and their ability to retire with dignity. We must continue to push for fair compensation that reflects the rising cost of living, robust mental health support on and off the job site, and uncompromising safety protocols that ensure every tradesperson returns home safely at the end of their shift.
To our CUSW brothers, sisters, and allies across British Columbia: thank you for your dedication, your craftsmanship, and your commitment to one another. Stand proud of the work you do and the foundation you provide for our province.
